Pear and apple sauce
Ahhh, October. The month of apples and pumpkins, Thanksgiving and Halloween, chilly nights and falling leaves, shorter days and big pots of herbal tea. Although the seasons aren't as pronounced here as they are back in Ottawa, London is starting to feel quite autumnal. And I've actually been enjoying the cooler temperatures of late - it feels like it's given the city a healthy breath of fresh air.
I've been getting loads of crisp pears and apples in my organic box lately. And at my house, a surplus of these fall beauties only means one thing: pear and apple sauce! This recipe is an easy way to use up all those extra apples and pears that are in abundance right now, and it's very simple to make. With no added sugars, only four ingredients, and a short cooking time, this recipe is an easy and healthy make-ahead snack or dessert.
The recipe is inspired by my mom's recipe for applesauce. She tends not to peel the apples and adds lots of ground cinnamon to the mix. One day I had a surplus of pears lying around, and I thought why not throw them in with some apples for some pear and apple sauce? The combination became an instant favourite. I find that this sauce has a milder and sweeter taste than the traditional version with only apples, all without the help of added sugar. I hope you enjoy it!
Pear and apple sauce
Using half pears and half apples makes for a milder and sweeter taste than traditional applesauce, which only includes apples. Use whatever variety of pears and apples you have on hand. I like to blend the sauce until it's completely smooth, but feel free to keep some lumps if you prefer it a bit chunkier.
- 4 medium pears, cored and chopped
- 4 medium apples, cored and chopped
- 2 cups water
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Place pears, apples, water and ground cinnamon in a medium saucepan and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Simmer covered for 30 minutes stirring once in a while, until the fruits are very soft and start falling apart.
Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. Using an immersion blender, blend until completely smooth in the saucepan. Alternatively, work in batches to blend the mixture in a blender. Transfer into storage containers or jars and chill in the fridge. The pear and apple sauce will keep refrigerated for about a week.
Serves six to eight.
